About Evans
Auckland based Malcolm Evans has been a cartoonist for most of his working life and, in between times spent as a possum trapper, grocery warehouseman, concrete pipe maker and paper mill worker, has been involved in art or art related pursuits for most of the rest. A job with the local paper, The Bay of Plenty Times, gave Evans the chance to get into cartooning in the early sixties and then, following his big OE, when he was for a time cartoonist on the Express and Star in Wolverhampton in the UK, Evans joined the NZ Herald in 1970. After succeeding Sir Gordon Minhinnick in 1976 Evans left the Herald in 1978 and helped establish one of NZ's biggest graphic art studios in Auckland and then in 1996 was invited back to the Herald. Voted Qantas NZ Cartoonist of the year in 1999 and 2002, Evans was dismissed from the Herald in 2003 when he refused to allow the Editor to direct what subjects he could address in his work. Today Evans is cartoonist to the Fairfax Group's suburban papers in Auckland and to the nationally distributed NZ Catholic, and his farming character Edna is now in her thirtieth year of publication in New Zealand's largest farming paper Rural News. In addition to cartooning and caricature Evans is also a sculptor in bronze and resin and a landscape painter and with his wife Lynne is enjoying the arrival of grandchildren.
